- Description:
- Pipe Bowl, Soapstone. Flattened stem that tapers to larger width. Under base of bowl, flattened stem also curves downward under bowl and extends beyond base of bowl ~0.35". Appears to have piece missing from extended area on left. Small amount of chipping around narrow end of stem by hole. Hole diameter at end: 0.15". Some small indentations in stone around narrow end of stem. Bowl tapers outward from its base to form slight tulip shape. Outside diameter at top of bowl: 0.98". Hole leading into stem blocked in bowl, somewhere in stem. Some worn scratches and lines on outside surface of pipe and stem. Small chip missing from rim of bowl. Chips and lines are all well worn and smooth. Repair material for hole extends beyond hole and is medium-brown material. Very small hole in bowl despite repair. When bowl facing vertically, stem droops down at angle of less than 45 degrees from vertical. (Appears that pipe might be used by holding bowl between one's first and second fingers, with thumb pressed against bottom of curved stem. Indentations around small end of stem might be from the user's teeth.) Paper in bag in a sleeve with pipe. White paper, blue ink: "Abenaki ..... / about 4-500 yrs old. Steatite (soapstone) / Pequaket Tribe / Chatham, N. H" / about $300 value". Inside bag, leafy material remnants, not burnt.
