Object Name:
Ax, Grooved
Object ID:
1977.502.075
Creator:
Eastern Woodland Indian
Description:
Ax, grooved stone. Motley gray in color. Roughly cylindrical in shape. One "relatively" flat surface which also has most even, gray-tan coloration. From narrow and not-very-sharp front edge, stone has a couple of large, slightly concave areas. Near center, stone thickest and widest. Some darker surface effects in this particular area. Near back end, wide, shallow irregular groove going around stone. At back, large knob that, when viewed from back, roughly triangular. Knob area, some pieces broken off and missing from surface. When held, object seems to be more of a hand-held tool, but this may be coincidental. On "flat" surface, a number of small, eroded pits. On other sides, some small, round, darker-colored inclusions.
