- Object Name:
- Bracket
- Object ID:
- 1976.051.03 a-b
- Place of Origin:
- East Weare, NH
- Date:
- circa 1880
- Description:
- Pair of identical cornice brackets, with top cap. Medium brown soft wood. Caps have beveled edges. Cut work on both front and back of brackets.
A. First coat of paint appears to be pale gold over white paint. Flaking, very heavy in some areas. A lot of alligatoring of the thick paint. Flaking off along some of age rings in wood. Cutouts on back surface, which probably fit into other trim because of no paint except for capillary action which would draw in paint from elsewhere. On top, seven iron nail heads, roughly flush with top. Some material broken off and missing on side near bottom at back.
B. Heavy white paint. Some paint with alligatoring. Paint has flaked off along growth rings. Some evidence that bracket applied over another surface due to unpainted surfaces. Nine iron nails in top. A couple iron nails on backside near bottom. On one side, oval area of paint cracks and losses that appear to indicate a knot underneath. However, on opposite side, no evidence of knot. - Material:
