- Description:
- Mold, box, Shaker, 11 pieces.
A. Shaker box-making device. Wood, brass, and steel. Rectangular flat platform surface with oval hole in center. Oval ~10" long, 6.9" wide. Top piece of wood 0.4" thick. Rectangular pieces of wood at each end: 3.5" high, 9.6" length, wood 0.4" thick. These two supports at either end, nailed at top with rectangular-headed steel nails. Six nails one end; five nails in other. In middle long side, support piece 5.6" and 5.8" in length, respectively. Height also 3.5". Each one of these has three rectangular steel nails holding them in place. Crack top surface running length of it, to one side of center line. Oval piece described in .01.b fits inside oval of this piece when in its closed position. In holding device, tall, oval, Shaker-style box, 5" high. Tapered overlap seam with four tapered straps with concave sides, ending in small, flat edge. Around center of box, thick piece of wood bent to conform to shape of box. Long, double-tapered seam, 0.45" high, about 0.17" thick. Unlike brass nails flush on box, there are round-headed, brass tacks holding this band in place. Round-headed tacks spacing 1.5" to 2" apart. Three tacks at overlap joint end of band. Box, one tack at end of each little finger, one at middle, and one at base. Two flat-head, brass tacks pass through outside surface, holding inside overlap surface. Light-colored band of wood underneath this surface strap roughly coincides with thickness of support band. Upper half of oval box body, some surface dirt on top half, possibly from being handled a lot.
B. Wood and steel. Shape oval with dimensions given for closed condition. Made out of several pieces of wood. Two layers together: 1.8" high. Oval split in half with split going from one long side to other long side. When opened up, length: 6.8". Split about 0.5" wide when open. On one piece on its long side, slot cut vertically 0.85" wide, 0.65" deep, that goes from top surface to bottom surface. Slide action where tongue on one piece fits into slot on other piece on middle of top surface. Runs lengthwise. Additional, thin rectangular block nailed to second piece over slot. Near end of movable tongue, square peg that keeps pieces from coming totally apart. Keeper block, rectangular with beveled top edges. Four flathead nails holding down keeper block. Three nails to hold down traveling tongue. Four nails on top and four on bottom holding other pieces together. On bottom, some hammer marks on each nail head. Some random hammer marks bottom surface. Pencil script number both halves of bottom: "34". Wood medium-tan, fine grain, soft. Some planer marks on one piece top surface.
C. Regular oval shape. 1.1" diameter hole just to side of center. Wood medium-tan, fine grain, soft. Bottom surface, circular saw marks. Top surface, quite smooth. Evidence of planer marks. Four sets of two nail holes in top that don't go all the way through. Edges smooth.
D. Wood oval. Light-brown, fine-grain, soft wood. 0.9" diameter hole, slightly off-center. Both sides relatively smooth. Small planer marks both sides. Edges smooth. Bottom side, four small, non-penetrating holes, evenly spaced near center of each side.
E. Wood box pattern. Oval shape, light-brown, fine-grain, soft wood. 0.9" hole near central area. Four rectangular holes near middle of each edge, non-penetrating. Long oval hole near one edge, non-penetrating. Pattern slightly warped and dished across width. Sides smooth. Evidence of planer marks on side with holes. Edges smooth and look ever-so-slightly canted inward, aside from fact that item warped.
F. Wood, steel, tin (?) box pattern. Shape oval made of medium-brown, fine-grain soft wood. Shallow rectangular slots cut into sides. One slot in center of long side of oval. The other two slots, offset from center on opposite side with about 2" between their central edges. Slots ~0.75" wide, 0.4" deep. Thin strap of metal as wide at block height over each of slots. Straps 1.8" length. Two, flat-head steel nails holding each end of strap. Nails rusty. Straps are dark gray and non-magnetic. One surface of oval, smooth; other surface, smooth but with a few rough spots along one edge.
G. Wood box pattern. Medium brown, fine grain, soft wood, oval shape. 1.1" diameter hole almost from center. Both sides, quite smooth with evidence of planer marks. One side, small non-penetrating, rectangular holes. Sides smooth. On one end of this oval, sides beveled back slightly from center of one long side to center of other side around one end. Bevel sides flat, width irregular around edge.
H. Wood box pattern. Shape oval. 1" hole just off center. Wood light-brown, fine-grain. One side smooth, other side smooth with some general overall roughness in comparison. Smooth side, planer marks. Smooth side, four, non-penetrating rectangular holes and are near center of each edge. Oval edges smooth.
I. Wood box pattern. Shape oval, medium-brown, fine-grain, softwood. 0.9" diameter hole near center. Sides relatively smooth with some finger marks. One side, four, non-penetrating rectangular holes; one hole in center of each side. Wood warped. Dish across width of it. Sides smooth. Slightly canted inward.
J. Wood box pattern. Shape oval, light- brown, fine-grain soft wood. Small knots and defects in wood. 0.95" diameter hole near center. Both sides fairly smooth with evidence planer marks in wood. Edges smooth, canted slightly inward.
K. Wood box pattern. Pattern oval shape, medium-brown, fine-grain softwood. 0.9" diameter hole near center. Tear-out of wood around hole on one side. Four, non-penetrating rectangular holes; one hole near center of each edge. Pattern slightly warped being dished across width. Edges smooth and look slightly canted inward. - Material:
