Object Name:
Mold, Butter
Object ID:
1969.052.15 a-b
Date:
1860
Description:
Mold and stamps, butter. Four carved blocks. Wood and brass. Rectangular frame with flat dovetailed corners. About 10-11 dovetails on each corner. Hardwood peg that passed through dovetail from top to bottom. Two oval finger holes near bottom edge on short sides.Holes in each corner of long sides of bottom surface, 0.3" diameter. Stains and marks near holes to indicate this may have been stacked on something else. Stamps (b) held in rectangular wood frame (a) with slightly flaring sides. They flare outward near top surface. Side pieces of frame for stamps: 1.5" high x 0.15" thick; appear to be fine-grained hardwood. Thicker piece of wood that constitutes bottom with 0.5" hole in center. Roughly rectangular grooves near corners on short edges of bottom. Two grooves per side for total of 4. Tarnished, flat-head wood screws that push through sides into stamps. On long sides, two grooves at bottom that go into base piece. At top, two screws that pass into each one of the stamp blocks. On short ends, two screws passing through base, and one screw each passing through the two stamps. From top, four stamps of slightly-darker wood. Dividing partitions between them that extend down to top of base piece of wood. One piece that goes from a long side to opposite long side between the stamps. On opposite sides, shorter pieces that pass from outer edge to central piece. Shorter pieces slightly overlap outer edges and central divider. Rectangular stamps have narrow raised edges and single angled cross-cut bead around their edge inside of outside straight edges. These would simulate a rope. Inside of that, four different designs: "R" with curlicue serif, another corn cob with leaves beside it, one of three fruits on short stems with two multi-lobed leaves, and fourth, row of blossoms and a bud along with three pointed leaves with smooth edges and veins that radiate from center of leaf. Slight wear marks on sides of stamp frame that correspond to finger holes in outer frame.
