Presumed to have descended in the family of the donor, some of whose ancestors are known to have lived in Essex County, MA, while others lived in Newfields, NH. The maker of this plate was formerly identified as Samuel Ellis. Ellis's hallmarks included the "SE" seen here, but were also used by Thomas Swanson (successor to Samuel Ellis) and Fasson & Sons. The latter often used these hallmarks in conjunction with the simple London mark seen on this dish.
