- Description:
- Box, wooden, covered with black painted fabric. Textile with black-textured finish. Cloth runs up front of lid, across top, down back, wraps under bottom where appears to be glued in place. Cloth appears to be glued to surface throughout box. Evidence on sides of lid that cloth on side overlaps cloth from top that runs partially down lid. Cloth on lower portion of ends, also overlaps front and back pieces. Seam hidden under surface decoration, which consists of bands of red cloth with shiny finish applied at left and right ends on front, top, and back surfaces. Brass upholstery tacks centered ~0.8" apart on decorative strips. End strips also wrap underneath bottom surface, terminating under larger brass upholstery tacks that act as feet, which appear to have iron underneath surface, worn through on each foot. Leather apron, ~1" wide extending down from bottom edge of lid. Held in place by brass upholstery tacks passing through red textile band. Same approximate spacing for these upholstery tacks for apron as those on other red bands. Leather apron brown in color with sprayed-like finish. Some portions bent under edge of lid. Red strips on bottom section at front terminated at their top by iron tack so apron doesn't bulge out. Broken brown simple leather handle on lid, terminating under surface of textile covering. Ends of handle extend ~1" under textile. Iron tacks holding handle in place. Diamond-shape piece of red textile inlaid in black textile in center of lid on top, meeting in butt joint around perimeter of diamond. Series of brass upholstery tacks centered on this joint and spaced ~0.5" on centers. Decorative border of upholstery tacks is symmetrical, but not exact. Ends of handle extend ~1" under textile. Iron tacks holding handle in place. Iron lock plate near top edge on front of box in lower section, 2" wide x 1.5" high. Plate and held by four iron tacks in its corners. Black finish to plate and hasp. Keyhole with iron stub in middle of circular opening at its top in plate. Keyhole extends downward with parallel sides and slightly-rounded bottom. Round-headed stud with pivoting, brass plate hanging from it above keyhole. Thin brass plate swings over keyhole opening. Slightly-curved tapered neck to plate leading to round disc with small protuberance on bottom. Vertically-oriented rectangular slot in upper left hand corner of top plate. Two almost flush iron studs on either side of keyhole. Hinge hasp attached to lid with two iron tacks under apron. Hinge portion roughly rectangular with tapered neck near top clipped corners at bottom and small finger tab on center bottom edge. Ends of iron loop for hasp slightly protrude from front of black-coated plate. Interior covered with wall paper lining, glued to inside surfaces. Covers meeting edges of lid and bottom sections. Paper seams for interior are at corners and edges of box on top and bottom. Paper at least 12" wide to cover some of surfaces without additional seams. Paper ~18" long or more. Small octagonal design on cream stock on lining paper. Corner sections of octagons slightly shorter than adjoining sections. Different edge lengths create small diamond shapes in corners. Small Maltese cross in center of each octagon. Short leather strap in center of back attaching top and bottom sections, 0.5" wide x ~2" long. Single brass upholstery tack at each end. Not properly mounted to be effective stop to keep lid from opening too far. Broken black leather band ~0.4" wide x ~8" long at left end of lid, held by iron tack at top and bottom, broken near bottom attachment point. Two leather hinge pieces hidden under exterior coating on back of box visible on inside when box open; held in place by iron tacks that stained through paper on inside. Box side material ~0.5" thick; front and back pieces ~0.3" thick. Bottom of box covered with same paper as found inside. Appears that paper may have slightly covered edges of cloth on bottom surface.
