Description:
Trunk. Small painted cloth-covered wood trunk with tan-colored leather handle on top. Handle secured with two domed brass fasteners, 0.75" diam., 5.6" apart. Area around fasteners slightly elevated due to handle material extending beyond ends of fasteners under textile cover. Rectangular metal keyhole plate. Worn brown leather band with deteriorated surface, ~6" wide, extending over opening between lid and base. Evidence of decorative stripe near its bottom edge on this leather which is on three sides only. Narrow cloth band around bottom edge of lid on three sides that covers edge of leather. Rounded upholstery brass tacks ~0.3" diameter, spaced ~0.8" center-to-center on this cloth band. Applied textile bands across side edges of lid and body on front, top, and back surfaces. Held in place by brass upholstery tacks. Six rectangular brass sheets attached to top with brass upholstery tacks around their edges. Two at front, two opposite them at rear and one each at center at each end of lid. All bent over and leading down sides, ~0.5". All nailed with same pattern of upholstery tacks with three each on vertical surfaces, four on each perpendicular side, and two on opposite end of vertical surface. Appear to be purely decorative. Cloth bands on lid appear to be dark blue color as opposed to black textile color on rest of top and side surfaces. Six brass upholstery tacks with one in each corner of bottom and one roughly centered on long sides. Cloth surface wraps around bottom edge, extends ~0.5". Held in place by small iron flathead tacks. Blue and white striped print paper on bottom of box, that covers beyond edge of textile. Paper abraded and some missing, particularly along edges of box. Repeat pattern in paper of small connected diamond-shaped stripe with two heavy stripes along edge. Plain field with thin stripe followed by another plain field. Band of 14 thin parallel lines. Design repeat size 1.53" for this interior paper. Inside of box including lid, previously white paper, now tan, with blue flowers with four leaves and short stems. Background of small blue dot pattern behind pattern of blue blossom groups. These blossoms are in patterns ~0.75" apart with repeat of ~.75". Pattern shifted about 0.5 repeat for each column. Leather hinge strap ~1.5" wide and ~2.5" long nailed to back surface of box and back surface of lid on inside. Two brass upholstery tacks in bottom of strap and two in top of strap. Leather strap surface was shiny at one point. Black iron plate 2" wide x 1.53" high on front of box, held in place by four smaller brass upholstery tacks. Vertical rectangular slot in plate upper left corner, which accepts latch which hangs down from top surface. Keyhole with thin decorative brass cover in center of plate. Steel key for lock. Hasp that hangs down from lid held in place by at least two iron tacks visible on front surface of lid above decorative band that covers it along with portion of leather apron. Lock and hasp surfaces were shiny and black, but no longer.
