- Description:
- Pierced Lantern, Tin. Straight cylindrical body with separate conical top. Narrow finger ring at top made of sheet tin plate with turned-over edges. Loop ends overlap and are joined by heavy wire which pierces the two ends of ring. This wire is coiled at its end and passes through finger rings and a small scalloped-edge disc, and then through hole in top of cone-shaped portion and terminates on inside with another loop section. Cone-shaped top has series of holes in two rows near top pierced outward. Below this is row of vertical slits, also punched outward. Next is single row of small holes. Plain band with three large holes, also punched outward. Near bottom edge is a row of small holes, row of vertical piercing then another row of small holes. Vertical solder joint up one side of cone. Bottom edge of cone flares out and makes joint with vertical walls of main body. Main body made of two big pieces of sheet metal. Door is one piece of sheet metal and has wire-wrapped edge on all four sides. Two vertical slots on one side that are used as hinges. Hinge consists of small piece of sheet metal wrapped around wire and soldered to main body. On side opposite hinges is a latch made of rolled sheet metal with horizontal slot that snaps over sheet-metal catch soldered to side of main body. Two horizontal pieces of sheet metal and above and below door that are soldered to main body and cap at top. At bottom the sheet metal is soldered to bottom pan and main body below door opening. Decoration on door is rectangle vertically oriented. It has two circular designs in center above each other. They have series small holes surrounded by radiating slits. Between them on sides are several radiating slits in a slight arc. The two circles and arc are surrounded by field of punched holes. Border of parallel slits on the four sides of rectangle. One diagonal slit in each corner. Straight line of small holes around outside of rectangle. Main body has a rectangular-pierced pattern array that is horizontally oriented. It roughly duplicates design on door but is in larger proportions. Circular discs pattern in main body has two rows of radiating slits that are concentric. Arc sections between them near edges are slightly larger and have two small fields of piercing on inside edge of arc. Some small diagonal but parallel slits in four corners of inside frame of slits that surround design. Outward frame consists of parallel slits with single diagonal slit in each corner. Main body flares at bottom edge at small joint that is where bottom pan and vertical sides are soldered together. Single candle cup inside consisting of sheet-metal cylinder with slot inside and rolled-top edge. Two tabs from candle cup extend through bottom and are bent over and soldered in place.
