Description:
Lantern, tin and glass. Sheet-metal cylinder over a flared round-shouldered foot which has turned-up rolled edge at its base. Cylinder and base soldered together. Cylinder has a series of small holes in a band of alternating two-high and three-high perforations. Holes are approximately 0.1" in diameter. Reeded section above holes, a flat area then another reeded section then a short band before top edge. On one side in central section is oval-shaped cut-out with a sheet-metal door that slides in a simple track on inside of cylinder. Door has simple turned-up tab handle. Above this cut-out is an applied plaque with raised letters in a rectangular field with raised border and clipped corners: "S. SARGENT'S / (on raised rib) PAT... / SEPT 17, 1861". Elongated oval-shaped globe that is attached to base with plaster around bottom lip of glass. Also glass lip at top which is inside sheet-metal cylinder with a sheet-metal, cone-shaped top. Old repair using multiple strands of string to hold glass and sheet-metal top together. Sheet-metal has three raised ribs around base. Row of 5-pointed stars, row of diamonds and then another row of 5-pointed stars around it. Turned over lip to join cylinder with cones. In center of cone side are 3 raised ribs to provide stiffness. Top of cone is cut off. U-shaped sheet-metal strap with cylindrical sheet-metal disc over it. Heavy wire with a loop in it that passes through disc, through strap and then into hole in cone. It is wrapped around horizontal piece of wire that extends outward through cone and through strap. It has loops on its ends. Roughly oval wire handle that passes through loops on ends of horizontal wire. The whole handle assembly is quite loose and worn. Burner in bottom of base is two-tab locking insert. Cylindrical reservoir, 2.5" in diameter and approximately 2" high. Layered shoulder near its base which holds two vertical locking tabs and it has a series of small holes around it to provide additional air for burner. Flat wick burner with adjusting screw handle mounted on a threaded brass base which fits into a brass collar mounted on top of reservoir cover. A perforated brass cone-shaped assembly surrounding wick. This brass assembly appears to be part of some device that is missing. Perhaps there was a small glass chimney that fit into this assembly. Old, crude solder repairs holding locking tabs in place.
