- Souvenir Spoon. Made by the William B. Durgin Company, Concord, NH. Silver. Souvenir of New Orleans, Louisiana. Round-ended handle, with egg-shaped bowl. Handle and shank are fully covered with decoration, on the front and back. Handle front decorated with a pelican with extended wings, feeding 3 chicks in a nest; the image has a mottled background. The nest sits on top of a 5-lobed bale (presumably representing a bale of cotton). Below the bale is foliage from sugar cane. Continuing down the stem are the segmented stalks of sugar cane, and below that is more foliage (probably rice). The edge is lined with small bamboo-like segments, perhaps representing sugar cane. The back has raised lettering, "NEW / ORLEANS / LA.", which is upper-case and stylized. The same segment-motif that decorates the edge of the front of the handle, also decorates the back. Stamped on back of the shaft are several marks: "D" in upper-case script (for Durgin) within an oval mark; "STERLING" in upper-case roman letters incuse; and "PAT'D M.SCOOLER" in upper-case roman letters, incuse.
