Wall Clock. Manufactured by Timothy Chandler (1762-1848) of Concord, NH. Banjo type. Materials: Mahogany; brass; glass; iron (dial); secondary woods mahogany and white pine. Gilded ovoid finial on ogee molded plinth; circular glass door enclosing dial having brass bezel and latch; pierced brass side brackets; glass throat and lower door panels in convex molded, veneered frames; the glass panels reverse painted in imitation of wood graining with gilt outlined pendulum view hole at center of door; drop-box at base. Lower door fastened with internal spring catch.
Rounded painted iron dial with roman hour numerals and pierced steel hour and minute hands matching in design. Winding hole above and to right of center. Eight-day brass movement.
"T. CHANDLER" upper case letters in downcurved mark, stamped on inner surface of backboard near base of throat, with figure "4" stamped below. Iron hanger. Two nail holes in lower backboard. Drop-box uses dovetail construction and was probably added to permit a longer run before winding. Panel frames of mahogany with mahogany veneer. Right side bracket broken and repaired. Brackets possibly reversed. Fragments of patterned green wallpaper along molded edge of backboard at left of clock. Pencil inscription on inside of lower door frame apparently reading: "Ben E. Stevens (illegible due to superimposed word) 11/ 5/ 45."
