Glazed round door over dial, with brass spring clasp. Enamelled metal dial has roman numerals, red dot above each numeral; winding hole above and to right of center. Below dial, in cursive, "E. H. Throat frame is mahogany with mahogany veneer; horizontal wooden dowels, capped with veneer, at top and base of throat sides. Center of throat glazed, and decorated with eagle over red/white/blue shield, under the word "PATENT". Above are clusters of gilded acorns, green and brown leaves, and a burgundy and gray ground. Base of clock is rectangular (oriented horizontally; has brass hook closure); glazed door has reverse painting titled "COMMERCE". Circular image of two women and one child (cherub) on the ocean. One woman is holding a flag (perhaps this is the goddess Liberty) and sitting in a raft with a paddle to one side. The second woman appears to be floating on the water, and is beside two horses. The child in on a seat and is surrounded by laurel leaves capped with an eagle (the glass is left unpainted within the laurel leaves; probably as a view-hole for the bob; however, bob channel is covered with a zinc plate and brass strap). The two women are dressed in yellow gowns. The image is surrounded with gold band. Spandrels and sides decorated with clusters of acorns and foliage. Colors include gold, red, white, blue, brown, red, and green. Back plate is pine (narrow strip of mahogany added to bottom), and extends beyond body on all sides; edges are rounded. Pencil inscription barely visible, "Pi__l". Steel or iron hanger on top. Numerous glue blocks used in the construction of lower box. Small nailed blocks used to hold in glass.
