- Mirror Clock. Made by Abiel Chandler (1807-1881), Concord, NH; 1830-1840. Materials: white pine and unidentified wood; glass; iron (dial); brass (movement); secondary wood white pine. Front consisting of a vertically oriented rectangular door having outer framework decorated on face with applied split balusters and applied projecting corer blocks. Baluster turnings of wide ring, rudimentary vase and cylindrical types. Groups of turnings alternately gilded and painted black. Corner blocks painted black. Remainder of visible surface of case stained brown. A stamped brass medallion applied to the front of each corner block. Two panels in glazed door -- decorated glass above and mirror below. Mirror is twice as high as upper panel. Circular reserve of clear glass at center of upper panel with gilt border and surrounding reverse stenciled design of stylized foliage in red, gray-green, gold and silver on a black ground. Door fastened with brass wire hook. Round painted iron dial, beneath clear glass reserved in upper door panel. Roman hour numerals and pierced steel hour and minute hands matching in design. A winding hole at each side of center, but slightly above it and unequal in distance from it. Inscription below center of dial, in black script: "[. .] Chandler.". Eight-day brass movement with strike of "rat-trap" variety. Wood of turnings unidentified. Mirror backed with a white pine board having beveled edges, on surface of which are pencil inscriptions giving dates of repairs and/or cleanings in 1883, 1895 and 1896. One large hole at center top of backboard used in handling clock. Several nailholes in lower backboard. Case refinished -- evidence of former black and yellow paint. Medallions are replacements. Two small brass blocks screwed to back of case -- probably done by antiques dealer to stabilize pendulum during transport. Separately stored parts: two lead weights (rectangular), pendulum.
