- Description:
- Plane. Medium-brown, fine-grain, hardwood, grain flecks patterns on both sides. Chamfer starts in notch in left side about 2/3 of way up, leads to square, front corner. It then extends backwards to front edge of handle cutout where it disappears. Chamfer on right side mirrors that of left. Chamfer also is at top edge of extension. Extension top surface is flat and may be slightly inclined downward. Some of the incline of surface is due to shrinkage and cracking of body. Entire flat left side is slightly cut in vertical and horizontal planes. Body is distorted overall slightly due to cracking. Extension is thicker in center than at bottom edge by about 0.03". On left side is square, bottom edge which has sole surface 0.52" wide. Vertical steel fence towards center of sole and is 0.3" high measured to adjacent sole, 0.05" thick. Has interruption in center for iron to pass through it. Front fence section held in place by two flathead, slotted, steel wood screws. Rear section held in place with three screws. At this adjacent sole: 0.28" wide. Next to it is another sole that is 0.28" deep and 0.23" wide. Outer sole surface is same elevation as central one. Cutting iron has two flat cutting surfaces that are side-by-side. Left cutting surface 0.29" wide, right is 0.42" wide. Gap between them is 0.25" wide. Iron has its tang on left side. Tang tapers slightly to square, top corner. Top surface of body is flat and extends backwards to curved front surface of oval handle cutout. It curves upwards to small crease and then turns up again and goes back over top of handle and extends beyond it. Back edge curved and chamfered. Handle's back surface starts on heel, extends upward, curves forward then at top edge it turns backward along bottom edge of tab. Handle has oval cross-section. Handle cutout area is inclined oval 2.8" high, 1.46" wide. Handle 1" thick. Some grooves on top surface of heel where handle surface terminates. Front inside surface of oval cutout is flat and smooth. Stamps on right side of body. On extension in front of mouth is horizontal stamp, all caps, serif: "H. W. SALTER". Similar stamp on rear portion of extension before handle. Below rear "SALTER" stamp is inverted stamp: "C. O. NOYES". On heel is stamp left side "16". Near center is stamp "7/8" with curved line between "7" and "8". Three "H. W. SALTER" stamps on heel. One vertical, one horizontal, and one diagonal. On toe nearer bottom but vertically oriented facing left are two "H. W. SALTER" stamps. Near top on toe is vertically oriented, facing left stamp with curved text "LAMB BROWNELL" and flat text below: NEW BEDFORD". Design element in center of short section, small oval, larger oval, small oval, then line.
