- Description:
- Plane. Dark-brown, fine-grain, hardwood with some grain flecks on right side. Annular ring growth shows on toe, heel, and handle. On left side chamfer starts in small notch at corner of extension, extends upwards to square, front corner. It then extends backwards to rear where it disappears before the upward curvature of oval inclined handle cutout. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left. Top edge of extension is flat and at right angle to body. On left side, extension extends backwards to edge of handle cutout where it drops down to bottom surface of handle cutout. At that point it continues straight backwards to square back edge. At back edge of body on right portion, handle extends upwards and forward to a point where top surface then extends backwards over top end of handle. Handle roughly oval in cross-section. Handle cutout is an oval-shape, 2.8" high, 1.4" deep. Forward inside surface of handle cutout is flat and smooth. Top surface of body extends backwards and then turns upward over top edge of handle cutout to a crease where it extends upwards and backwards more to terminate with chamfered edge above handle. Tap extends backwards over top of handle, about 0.1" shorter than body length. On right side are two pieces of fencing made of steel that extend from front to back of body except for a beveled cutout for the iron. Fence:0.8" high, 0.13" thick. Top edge sits in small groove in body. Front fence section has slightly rounded, front, bottom corner and is held in place with two flathead, slotted wood screws. Rear section held in place with three similar screws. Back edge of front fence section has horizontal, oval section cut out for chip relief. Front surface of rear fence section has double beveled front edge, about 0.8" long. This is made to match up with recessed bevel on back of iron. Iron has small groove on back surface. Body in area of iron slightly relieved for chip clearance as well. Blade width: 0.23". Below iron fence is another iron fence which is flush with bottom sole surface. Lower fence: 0.05" thick, 0.7" high and runs length of plane in one piece. Held in place by four, small, slotted, flathead, steel, wood screws. Distance upward from bottom sole to second sole: 0.63". Horizontal distance between the two fences is 0.37". Two stamps on right side near center just above iron. One is "H. W. SALTER" and the other is in front of handle inverted stamp: "C. O. NOYES". On left side on extension near front: "H. W. SALTER". On toe is curved text "LAMB BROWNELL" and below it is straight text which is "NEW BEDFORD". In the curved space above NEW BEDFORD is small central oval and on either side of it are two ovals that touch the center oval's side. Lines extending horizontally from outer edges of ovals. On heel, left side facing left: "H. W. SALTER" vertically oriented and goes through back where "L" is are the numerals "1" "6" stamped. On right side of heel is stamp "7" "8" and an integral sign in between them to make it "7/8". Paper label, left side, in front of handle opening, red ink, "Noyes / 10-22-57". Lower right corner is "*11--[symbol of circle with 'ears' on it]".
