- Description:
- Tall Case Clock. Movement made by Timothy Chandler (1762-1848), Concord, NH; c. 1800. Case is curly birch, of pegged construction. Hood has arched top, 3 plinths, and 3 ball-and-spire brass finials with pierced fretwork between the plinths. Hood has reeded free-standing front columns with brass caps and bases, and reeded quarter columns in the back. The hood also has glazed, arched sidelights. The hood door is arched and glazed, has a beaded inner edge, brass escutcheon, and brass lock held in with hand-wrought nails.
The clock has an eight-day brass movement, on a board with semi-circular die stamp, "T CHANDLER". Dial is enameled iron, and arched shape. It has a moon-phase disk within the arch which is visible between 2 world globes and date wheel, and is stamped "OSBORNE'S MANUFACTORY BIRMINGHAM". The disk is painted and includes a moon image and a sailing ship image among others. Clock face is painted white with roses in each spandrel. The clock dial has roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals. The minute and hour hands are of pierced steel or iron. Above the center is a seconds dial with a plain metal hand. Below the center is a day-of-the-month disk. There are 2 winding holes; one has a grommet while the other grommet is missing.
Waist has rectangular door with a beaded edge, and a brass escutcheon which matches the hood escutcheon. The waist door is missing its lock. There are reeded quarter columns with brass caps and bases on either side, and concave molding at top and bottom. The columns are supported from inside the case by numerous glue blocks. Penciled, cursive inscriptions on the inner surface of the waist door: "J A Heath / O - 1 - 17 - 5 / Contoocook / __ / Cleaned Dec. 7. 1899", and (in blue) " J E C 11/15/45".
The base of the clock is plain rectangular with ogee feet. The backboard is white pine. There is no bottom board. - Material:
