- Object Name:
- Blanket
- Object ID:
- 1990.003.02
- Place of Origin:
- American
- Date:
- 1820-1840
- Description:
- "Rose" blanket-cream-colored wool with 11" stylized "compass" rose in muti-colored wools embroidered in two corners. Rose blanket, probably American-made rather than imported. The blanket material appears to wool sheeting of homespun yarns, as evidenced by the crepey appearance caused by overspun yarns, which are S-twist. The blanket is one width, suggesting professional weaving, however. Two compass roses are worked in the corners of one side. The roses are 11 inches in diameter, and are embroidered in herringbone and surface satin stitches with Berlin wool yarns (indicating a date of about 1820 and later) in vibrant shades of salmon pink, pale blue, gold, cream, and brown. Two sides of the blanket are selvedge and two edges are hemmed. The hemmed edge on the rose side are overcast with pale blue blanket stitches (now mostly worn away).
