- Description:
- Plane, skew rabbet, made by Joseph Milton (1789-1864), Canaan, NH. Beech. For 1 7/8" rabbet. Medium-brown, fine-grain, hardwood with some annular rings showing on right side. Chamfer starts in a small groove about 2/3 of way up front, leads up to square, front corner, goes across top and to a rounded, back corner, down side where it stops in small groove. Chamfer on right mirrors that on left. Cutting surface flat. Iron angled back to left side about 25 degrees. Cutting width: 1.87". Iron has beveled and sharpened right edge that protrudes slightly beyond side of plane. Body is approximately 0.07" narrower than blade. Three extra holes on sole surface. Front hole has flattened end of a small piece of iron, about 0.4" diameter stuck in the wood. Wood inlay on right side at bottom edge. It extends upward at 45 degree angle towards center of body. About 0.26" wide and 0.7" long. Slightly lightly color of wood than main body. It extends across sole, about 0.24" and extends up right side about 0.11". One piece of inlay before iron; three segments of inlay behind iron which may have been just one piece but has cracked due to age and/or use. Sole surface of inlay somewhat abraded behind iron and is slightly recessed and tapered upward to become even with sole surface about 1.75" behind its front edge. On left side is a slightly tapered, conical chip relief hole that is angled towards front on right side to follow angle of iron. In upper right corner of this area, top edge is cut directly back to the bed plane. Iron is stuck in place and has central tang. Top end of tang turned over slightly in both directions. Few straight, diagonal lines on bottom surface of tang where it is exposed above block. Near top, horizontal stamp, box, rounded ends, serrated edges: "J. MILTON''. Below that are three similar stamps: "I. G. W. C." The two top stamps look as if the "I.G..W..C" may have been stamped over something else as other characters are visible or may be multiple stamps.
