Description:
Jack plane, made by Philip Sargent (1790-1858), Concord, NH. Medium-brown, fine-grain, hardwood with wide annular rings on sides and prominent ray traces on toe and heel. Broad, shallow chamfer that starts on left side above extension, leads upward to square, front corner, runs across edge to rounded, back corner, then down top of extension. Top of extension surface slightly concave. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left side. Chamfers start and terminate in very small slot. Cutting surface flat. Mouth 2.5" wide. Iron 2.13" wide. Sole elevated 1.9", roughly width of cutting blade. Sole surface on left side from outer edge to elevated sole 1", on right side is 0.4" wide. On left side extension vertical surface has three holes, one in center and one near front and one near back. Remnants of threads in holes probably from wood screws thus indicating something is missing. Handle oval in cross-section. Extends upward from top surface 3.8", has small backward tap across top. Inset into slot in plane that has squared front edge and radius back edge. Slot 3.8" long, 0.94" wide. Small gap along front left edge of handle assembly where it is set into body. Iron for this plane does not sit in place and doesn't appear to be appropriate for this body. Iron and back iron have somewhat stable corrosion. Back iron has slightly downward curve front lip and rectangular cast land in it. The land rides in a slot in iron. Top of back iron flat with low-cut, long, clipped corners that have slightly beveled straight edges. Iron has straight cutting edge. Long rectangular slot in iron with rounded keyway top edge end. Round slotted cap screw that holds iron and back iron together. Top of back iron turned over in both directions from having been struck. Iron has long clipped corners. Stamp in iron which is not complete. It is roughly rectangular with semi-circular top edge. Outer left, right, and semi-circular edges serrated. Bottom straight edge not enough to determine decoration. Raised surface inside semi-circular edge. Raised area has medallion shape with clipped corners, slightly concave edges and two semi-circular edges leading to bottom point. 8-pointed star in center of medallion. Letters across bottom of stamp in two horizontal lines. They no doubt read "WARRANTED CAST STEEL" but they are incomplete. semi-circular area at left. "...OO...SON BROTHERS". Stamps on toe, near top, horizontal, box stamp, serrated edges: "P SARGENT". Below that box stamp, serrated edges: "CONCORD". Below that, box stamp, serrated edges, "NH". Further down is plane stamp: "H. DOW." Below that, box stamp, plane edges, "HIRAM. DOW."
