Description:
Jack plane, made by William Warren (1818-1861), Hudson, NH. Medium-to-dark-brown hardwood. Annular rings showing on both sides and some grain flecks on right side. Chamfer starts on front edge at a groove, extends upwards to square front corner, extends across top edge of plane back to rounded, back corner and down edge to a groove. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left side. On left side is additional area where chamfer was widened near heel and are some regularly-spaced grooves across chamfer that are tool marks for unknown reason. Cutting surface flat. Mouth and blade 2" wide. Back iron has slight downward curve front edge and has flat top edge with steeply angled clipped corners. Fillister head screw holds iron and back iron together. Iron has rectangular slot for clamping screw to slide in and there is a round keyway at top end of slot for screw head to pass through. Top edge of iron is turned over mostly towards back side from having been struck. Clipped corners slightly angled. Iron stamped at top on its front surface. Rectangular stamp with semi-circular top edge. Perimeter edge serrated all the way around. Two elevated areas in the semi-circular space at left and right edges. Between them is raised profile of deer head facing right. Antlers, left four points, right three points. Depression for eye. Modeling for mouth and edge of head above neck. Lettering upper case, serif, from left around semi-circular edge: "BUCK * BROTHERS". Below that is: "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". The two Es are crushed and L is just an outline. Handle has oval cross section; extends upward and slants toward front. Curved tab at top that is curved towards back. Handle assembly inlaid and top surface is 4" long, 0.9" wide. Front edge of slot square, back edge rounded. Flat-head, slotted, steel, wood screw that extends downward near front edge of handle inlay piece. Inlay sunk below surface 0.14" down. On right side are two stamps, same, near center, angled upward, "M. PAIGE". Leading stamp not as complete as one closer to back. Two stamps on toe, horizontal, near top edge. Top is rectangular but lightly struck. "W. WARREN". Second stamp below it, rectangular with serrated edges top, left, and bottom. Right edge gone. "NASHUA."
