- Description:
- Fore plane, made by Matthew H. Milton (1819-1905) and his father, Joseph Milton (1789-1864), Canaan, NH. Long plane of light-brown, fine-grain hardwood. Chamfer on left side starts in notch about halfway up, leads upward to square, front corner, goes all the way across top to back rounded corner and halfway down side to notch. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left. Cutting surface is flat. Iron 2.45" wide, mouth 2.5" wide. D-ring handle assembly loose; overall height 4.7", thickness 1", length 6.3". Slot in wood for handle: 4.7" deep. Handle slot has evidence of center spur drill at back end to create curved surface. Chisel marks in bottom of slot. Some glue residue in bottom and sides of slot. Width of handle opening, 1.3". Length of opening, 2.9". Handle consists of oval cross section that is angled forward. Curved piece that goes backward over top of handle to prevent hand from sliding off. Front surface of finger hole flat. Strike button at front is slightly darker wood, diameter 1". Slot in bed for cap screw to hold iron together. Rectangular stamp on toe, serrated edges and serrated line between top and second line of text: "M. H. MILTON / CANAAN. N. H". Below that is rectangular stamp with curved ends, serrated edges: "J. MILTON[.]" Iron and back iron have flat, top edges and long, shallow-angle edge clipped corners. Back iron has slight undercut front edge. Cutting edge straight. Rectangular land on surface of back iron that rides in a slot in iron. Rectangular slot in iron with circular keyway at top end. Flat-head cap screw that holds iron together. Slightly rounded over corner on top edge of iron from being struck. Rectangular stamp on iron with semi-circular top edge. Outer edges serrated. Semi-circular plain surface inside semi-circle at top that has plain edges and has shield or chevron-shaped depression in it. Appears to have flat top edge, two diagonal corners, straight sides, and two angled bottom edges that meet at center. Inside the shape is 8-pointed star. Looks like two pellets, one being on either side of top, central ray of star. In the semi-circle: "MOULSON BROTHERS". Bottom two lines extend from side to side completely: "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL".
