- Description:
- Plane, jointer, made by Matthew H. Milton (1819-1905), Canaan, NH. Long plane of light-brown, fine-grain hardwood with wide annular rings on sides. Chamfer starts at front in a small notch about halfway up, extends to square, front corner, extends back along length of plane to rounded, back corner and down side to small notch. Chamfer on right mirrors that on left. Cutting surface is flat. Width of mouth and iron: 2.5". Strike button near front 0.9" diameter that protrudes slightly and is medium-brown wood. Appears to have shrunken slightly but is still firmly in place. Handle is inlaid piece, 6.2" long x 1" wide x 4.7" wide. It is loose and has cross-section that is oval and inclined toward front. Curved section on top that extends backwards over top. Opening in handle 1.4" wide x 3" high. When it is in place it extends 3.9" above body. In cavity where handle sits is evidence of drill hole at back of slot that creates the semi-circular back edge of slot. Chisel marks at bottom of slot. Some wood shavings and probably adhesive residues on bottom and lower edges of handle insert. Front edge handle slot angled upward and forward. Two stamps on toe, horizontal near top. Top stamp rectangular with serrated edges, "M. H. MILTON". Just below is another rectangular stamp, serrated edges, "CANAAN. N. H". "MILTON" and "CANAAN" are separate stamps because space between them is slightly larger at left side than at right. Below that is rectangular stamp with semi-circular ends and serrated edges, "J. MILTON". Irons are joined together by bolt with flat head and straight sides but is chamfered around top edge. Back iron has slightly curved top edge at front where it bends down to press against iron. Back iron has small land cast into surface that rides in a slot on the iron under bolt edge. Back iron has flat, top edge. Corners are irregularly clipped and are at shallow angles with the sides. Wide, irregular, round or filed chamfers along top and top-side edges of back iron. Whole top flat surface of back iron is round. Iron has flat, top edge with long, shallow-angled, clipped corners. Top edges of iron are turned over at extreme, outside edges from being struck. Stamps on iron. Rectangular stamp with semi-circular top edge. Outer edges serrated. Bottom two lines are all caps, serif: "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". These extend all the way to the edge. In the semi-circular, top edge are letters around perimeter: "BUCK BROTHERS". In center is raised image of deer head facing right in profile. It has an eye and some small raised lines above head to indicate antlers. To left and right of deer head are triangular, raised areas with flat-top surfaces. Below that is smaller stamp that is slightly flattened horizontal oval with two peaks at center that face upward and downward. Inside edge is plain. In center are relief letters, all caps, block letters: "BUCK BROTHERS".
