- Description:
- Hilt, sword, wrought iron, 18th century. At top is horizontal, roughly rectangular portion with rectangular hole for sword tang. From this central piece are eight heavy wire sections that form framework for cage-like structure. Six of the wires lead directly to central ring at bottom which would probably surround lower portion of handle of sword. On right side is long, decorative strap that has a number of circles, diamonds, and other shapes to form robust decoration. At front right side is curved, rectangular piece that is pierced with triangles and circles and has a number of small curlicues around its exterior edge. On front is another decorative element similar to right side near back. This also includes geometric shapes, round and diamond piercings. At left front is plain oval, vertically oriented. At left rear is portion of decorative element probably duplicate of that opposite. Approximately half of this element is missing. At top near front are a couple of nearly symmetrical curved portions that lead from side to top front. At back on top is wide, flat curl decoration that only rises about 0.75" above adjacent strap. All of these elements appear to be forge welded by blacksmith.
