- Description:
- Apple Parer, mechanical, iron, steel, brass, and wood. Made by Goodell Company, Antrim, NH. Cast iron frame with steel wing-headed machine screw that allows device to be clamped to table edge. A wood handle shaft rotates an apple that is mounted on three tines and by hand action pares it. Handle is medium-brown wood with flat end, has bulbous handle that narrows to neck, expands slightly then has straight taper to brass collar. Under collar is large gear which derives power from the semi-circular movement of handle arm and transmits that via meshing gears to the shaft with tines. Mounting frame work has cast semi-circular tooth track. Handle is pushed from one extreme of track to the other to pare apple. Has a cam and a spring-loaded arm that seems to push the fruit off the tines at one point in its travel which cores it with the curved blade. Broken spring connected to blade-holding arm applies pressure for blade to ride on surface of fruit. Raised cast lettering on back of semi-circular track of body: "MANUF'D BY GOODELL CO. ANTRIM N.H. PAT. MARCH 18 1884".
