- Description:
- Watchman's rattle (clacker), wood and metal, with handle that turns to make noise. U-shaped wood frame that has slot. To create the slot the wood was drilled and sawn. Portions of two drill holes at bottom of slot. Drill holes for handle which passes through the sides near open end. Handle has two six-lobed cams that are out of phase with each other. Slot has two thin strips of wood ~0.8" wide that are clamped in place by the brass insert and secured with three slotted brass wood screws. Device is twirled about the handle and the cams allow the strips to quickly snap against side of next lobe thus creating a loud noise. Slight polish on surface of handle and rest of frame work has a thin slightly polished surface. Noise-making strips do not appear to have finish. Cam devices are fastened to handle shaft with steel pins or finish nails.
