Provenance:
At one time, it was thought that this might be the cup said to have been taken from King Philip (d. 1676) by Daniel Ide and donated to NHHS by Eunice Ide in 1874. According to the biography of William B. Ide (1796-1852), published in 1880, Daniel Ide "was engaged as an officer in the noted King Phillip war, and took from that Indian chief a small tin cup, which has been handed down as an heir-loom in the several succeeding generations of his family to the year 1874; when Mrs. Eunice Ide, widow of the late Daniel Ide of Croydon, N.H., deposited it, accompanied with an account of its history, in the archives of the New Hampshire Historical Society." However, another source, Ballou's Monthly Magazine, Vol. 55, Jan.-June, 1882, states that the cup is actually of Britannia metal and was presented to the New Hampshire Antiquarian Society; it has no handle and is stamped "I.M." 12/29/2010: The NH Antiquarian Society, now known as the Hopkinton Historical Society, confirmed that they have the cup donated by Eunice Ide.
